Exploring community renewable energy for Bigbury and neighbouring parishes
Devon Energy Collective CIC (DEC) is leading work to explore the feasibility of a single community-owned wind turbine in Bigbury, with potential benefits for the surrounding parishes of Ringmore, Kingston and Aveton Gifford.
Bigbury Net Zero is supporting access to information and opportunities for local discussion because exploring locally generated renewable energy aligns closely with our aims: helping our community reduce carbon emissions, respond to the climate and biodiversity emergency, and consider practical ways local action can make a difference.
DEC is responsible for developing the proposal, carrying out the technical work and leading the community engagement process. No decision has been made about whether the turbine will go ahead. The project is currently about establishing whether it is technically, financially and environmentally viable, and giving local people opportunities to understand the proposal and contribute their views.
BNZ’s role is not to tell people what view to take on this particular proposal. We want local people to access clear information, examine the evidence, ask questions, and make up their own minds.
Community Questions
DEC know the proposal has prompted questions locally. Alongside a series of events and opportunities to find out more, they have brought together a set of Community Questions. As the project develops, BNZ expect answers to be supported by relevant evidence and technical information where available, with areas of uncertainty clearly identified.

We will continue to use the Bigbury Net Zero website and social channels to signpost opportunities to learn more, examine the evidence and take part as the project develops. DEC remains responsible for the proposal itself, its technical evidence and the formal community engagement process.

Join DEC for a free day trip to North Cornwall to visit an EWT DW61 wind turbine similar to the one proposed for Bigbury.
Tuesday 29th September
6 - 9pm Bigbury Memorial Hall - drop in for a cup of tea and a conversation, or simply to look at DEC's proposals which will be on display. You’ll be able to find out more from DEC CIC about the project. There will be information boards and maps available and representatives will be able to discuss the details with you, such as noise, ecology and transport of wind turbine parts.
Community Ownership
Thursday 8th October
7 - 9pm Bigbury Memorial Hall - DEC Meeting to discuss Community Ownership, what it could look like for our parishes and how to get involved - with presentations from community energy projects elsewhere in the UK and information on raising funds through community investment.
Sunday 18th October
12 noon. Challons Combe Farm. Join DEC for a visit to the turbine site, a chat and a bite to eat. Please note, the proposed turbine location is high on the hill and remote to access. Hosts Challons Combe will provide a vehicle for those who would like a lift and will also provide some homegrown food to sustain the conversations!
