The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation — the AMOC — is a vast system of ocean currents that carries warm water northwards through the Atlantic and colder, deeper water southwards.

It moves an extraordinary amount of heat: about 50 times the energy humanity uses. That heat transport is one reason north-west Europe has the climate it does.

Most plastic begins as fossil fuel. Oil and gas are extracted and processed to make plastic, generating greenhouse gas emissions throughout its life cycle—from production through disposal.

The UN Environment Programme estimates that plastic production alone is responsible for more than 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Plastic pollution also damages marine and terrestrial ecosystems, while recycling on its own cannot keep pace with the amount being produced

Global warming is no longer a distant future projection. The latest assessment finds that human-caused global warming reached around 1.37°C above pre-industrial levels in 2025, and on the current trajectory, long-term warming could pass 1.5°C in around four years.

That matters because 1.5°C is not a magic cliff edge, but every additional fraction of a degree increases the likelihood and severity of impacts — from extreme heat and rainfall to ecosystem loss and changes in oceans and ice.
